Nikos Oikonomopoulos talks to Natalia Germanou on Radio Sfera 102,2. (16.12.2016)

The interview was a part of the Greek Music Week celebration on Radio Sfera 102,2.

Natalia Germanou and Nikos (Νίκος Οικονομόπουλος) started their conversation discussing Nikos’ new song  «Είναι Κάτι Λαϊκά» - words by Eleni Giannatsoulia and music by George Sabanis -  which was chosen as the favorite song by the singers who were taking part in the Greek Music Week on radio Sfera 102,2. They put it on the top of their choice. Nikos expressed his gratitude to them. Nikos also thanked his listeners for loving this song and bringing it to the first place.  Even though he liked «Είναι Κάτι Λαϊκά» from the first time,  Nikos had some misgivings about it, because this song's music goes beyond the style of laika  we've got used to hear from him until today, and the singer did not know how the audience would accept it.

For any artist, a change in the repertoire is quite necessary after a number of years. Respecting the opinion of his colleagues in this regard, Nikos dared for a change. From the first moment of radio airing, this song has got the full acceptance and love of the audience. As a result, it has skyrocketed to the first place of radio charts and in a couple of weeks time has reached more than 6.500.000 views on YouTube.

Nikos says that so far he had not truly enjoyed the success of his songs because of the stress he had every time after one successful recorded work thinking about the new, upcoming songs…  He is a terrible perfectionist and always judges his job very strictly.
N.G:  "Κοίτα Να Μαθαίνεις", it was the song with which you introduced yourselves substantially,  we learned about you with that song and with that song we loved you. It was nearly ten years ago! You were just a young kid then

Nikos:  I was 22, I’m not hiding my age….  It seems silly to hide your age

NG: I wrote about you on Facebook, I said very simply and very bluntly… that my Niko is the one, who does not do the magazine covers, does not set up paparazzi, does not give interviews, does not come out on television, do not go here and there, who is going out nowhere.

Nikos: I don’t do this not because of cunning, do not get me wrong…

NG: If you don’t like doing that [promotion] - good on you! Others feel fine with that and do it very nicely, and they get support from it, but you do not have fun [with this sort of promotion] , so you are not doing it .... For all these years not doing these things - see what you’ve achieved! See how many beautiful songs you have sung, see how many people are coming to see you at “Fever” and “Thea”!

Nikos: I have no complaints, I never expected this…

NG: In other words, you are a living proof that the world of the song, your world, does not need a lot of glitter and a lot of shine, and a lot of "show biz" to get success.

Nikos:  Let it be there - and glitter, and all what you say, just - not too much. Showing off and pretending - this is not nice. Why should we show more than what we are? Who might benefit from this? If you show something more than what you are the other will understand that you are a liar and you're not what you seem to be. He'll understand when meets you or when he sees your job anyway, if you're a singer. Imagine if I decide that I am handsome enough and will go out on the covers, go on television - what’s the meaning of that? There are many examples. I am already got bored with seeing those things on television. It has become sickening for me to see the same people telling you the same empty things, [which are far from the people’s interest] very snobbish. Stop it you guys! The times have changed, as you see, things are changing daily, we stand on where we live, in our little world. The fact is - I'm a singer, you are a journalist, presenter, our friend is a journalist ...  “There is trouble in the Gypsy village!” [it means: “Who cares?’] as we say in Patra, no biggie. Just do your work nicely and beautifully. Developments in the world go so fast. We now talk about songs and beautiful things, Christmas and holidays and food, and there are people next to us, here, near the border, which are dying from the cold, not having shoes to wear, having war in their homeland …These things,  they do not show them on  TV…
And we all are permanently having the mouth  into a microphone, or a keyboard to write review on the other, we all are judging everyone, everyone knows everything...You all, guys, do you know everything?
And when someone comes out and speaks having a time like I do now... I can not restrain my nerves sometimes, I resent and, since I do not speak much, I am concerned and say - why do people try to judge? Why do they do it? Why they are not looking at themselves? Why do you judge others since you, yourself, didn't change your wrong doings? ... Why?
NG: You're right of course! Simply we live in the era when we all think we know everything. All we want to say is our opinion. What was it lately making you angry about the media?
Nikos: I will not talk about myself because I never caused a problem, but when I had a need to talk about something that has to do with me I did not hid, not pretended, nor expected if they would say good or bad. Generally when a man is not in the system - the system exists both in a good and in a bad way - …but I do not use neither good nor bad one, because I do not serve it. Now, what is it - the system?  We do not know, but from the result  finally we understand who are those serving the system, and we will know all who serve it. The point is that [it looks like] “do you know you can be outside? Once you know, then do it there, I will admit you.” And when someone is talking, they start to say what is he. What is? Nothing! I never said that I am something. I am what I do - I sing. Can I do it well? This is for people to judge during the time I will exist, if I will. So far, thank God, things are going well. People will judge me for my song, for the substance, that is the essence. I sing , I don’t do something else.
Well, now let's convey some good messages, because there are many young people listening to us and they are coming under the influence, and especially - when a young man is talking to young people. I'm young and I do try in the way I can. I do it in the working place when people come backstage to see me in the morning to take one more picture, even though they do their first ones on the stage anyway. I try to tell them to be authentic and not to follow the crowd. For example, let’s mention the trick with selfies, all of us are taking selfies, or the trick with the bunny on your face, everybody is using a selfie with a bunny mask in the face. I do not mock it, but I want to say that we all do the same things and do not stand out from the crowd. I wish people to gain a personality,  to those who have not got it. It’s a great thing to have a personality!

NG:  What if you will go to a talent show as a judge, or it is no way you are going to?

Nikos: Normally in our life, we should never say never. But at this moment I feel like I will not go. I would not go because I know already about it, I have the experience to learn what it was. You were not in my place, I was a singer, I was the competitor.. I do not think as a singer I could speak there, because there can be a case when a kid doesn't sing well and you have to judge.
But when you judge something you have to do it strictly and, at the same time, not to offending the other, still to tell the truth. And now, today, when someone tells the truth, it's like being a rebel. The truth therefore nowadays is like revolution and the falsehood is our daily routine. Just stay out of the lie, tell the truth, and you will be assured, you sleep well at night.

NG: What role do you play in the selection of your songs?

Nikos: I hear the opinion of others, but after all these years, the most important role  in this case is mine and I do not ever betray my instincts in the selection of my songs.
After that, Nikos Oikonomopoulos says the new CD is not ready yet, because he does not want it to be “a snack”, but she wants it to be a job that will leave the imprint, as it was happened with his previous works. The new album is expected to be released in January 2017.
This winter Nikos collaborates in FEVER with Stelios Rokkos, Apostolia Zoi and Rania Kostaki.  This programme keeps the nightclub full since the day they started, and it has really revolutionized the nightlife of Athens.  Nikos is on the stage until 5.30 am and after that he is receiving his fans, who are waiting him backstage to take a photo and to congratulate him with his performances.
The interview was nicely ended by Nikos with words addressed to Natalia Germanou:
"Always love sincerely, love is food!"

Nikos Economopoulos talks to “Proto Thema”

http://www.protothema.gr/Stories/article/425088/nikos-oikonomopoulos-laiko-eidolo-eton-30/

After capturing the reader's attention with a few loud phrases such as: “Nikos Economopoulos - is a secure investment”,   or :  “Nikos Economopoulos -  is a singer -  phenomenon”, Zoi Dimitriou, the journalist of “Proto Thema”,  leads us directly to her conversation with the singer , who describes himself as a cautious and modest man.  He answers questions that sometimes seem out of place.
For example, she tells him that he looks older than his age. He certainly looks younger, he is looking great, but Nikos always felt his maturity because of the responsibility he was taken upon him. And this stigma makes him look different, not like other popular stars.   We can see it in his words, when he talks about what he feels on stage or why he wears a formal suit. Everything in him is dedicated to his audience, to the people he sings for.
He shares some of the facts of his biography. It turns out there were some wonderful singers in his family.  His maternal grandfather was a church cantor and his father sang a lot at home. So, Nikos wanted to become a singer from the age of 5. And he started to sing in the night clubs from 17.
His fame came to him at his 22 after winning the “Dream Show 2”. Since then success follows him.
“The song has changed my life for better “, he says, “I’ve learned what “the love of people” is and how to express myself through the song.  They ask, why do I sing about separation?  This is because I sing about love and separation.   Well, what would you like me to sing about? Should I sing about the lawn in my garden? No, I sing about people and their relationship.”
The limelight didn’t affect his nature. He likes to stay at home. He would like to be at the sea every day.  He loves car driving and speed in general. He likes to travel Greece and dreams to see all the islands and mountains in his country.
He doesn’t make a difference where he performs: a real artist is always giving what he can to his public. But for his American and Australian performances he had to sing more songs, as they been waiting for this day. There his programme was based on the laika songs, because his audience there was brought up with the laika. He says: “The old laika singers had other sounds, other experiences and beautiful lyrics. The last eight years was the rise of foreign music (in Greece). I don’t say it’s not nice, but young children… young children speak and sing in foreign language. You know what I see in social media? They write in English like if they do not know the Greek language. Why?”

Nikos takes his job very seriously, giving his heart to it. He remembers how he found his vocal chords were tired after 6 days of nonstop performances.
He jokes about his female fans: “You ask me if I have admirers? The most typical of them would be a little girl of 6 and her 75 year old grandmother. They like to come to see me after the show"

Answering to Zoi’s question about his most beloved song from the childhood, Nikos recalls “Pio kali i monaxia ” by Parios. Catching from there a chance to finish nicely the conversation she asks: “Maybe you are a hidden romantic?” - “Like hell I am!” (“Yeah right”) – he smiles...

New song "Ποτέ" (Never) - lyrics & English translation

Never

The two of us, we do not live together anymore ...
I made a mistake and now I am paying
But I will  never erase you from my life,
But I will never stop ( loving you )

Everywhere I will look for you
Thousand times I'll ask forgiveness from you
For the fact that you're not here,
I will write on walls that I’m madly in love with you
And I'll shout that it is my fault, my darling

Because it is never too late to change your mind,
Because our romance will never come to an end
Because it is never too late for an apology,
My darling,  wherever you are, remember,
In love, no one loses

The two of us, we are two strangers now,
I know it's me to be blamed
That you're away from me,
But I’ll never go to a new page,
But I'll never stop (loving you)  ...

Nikos Economopoulos: "I feel blessed '

On the eve of his thirtieth Nikos Oikonomopoulos had a heartfelt conversation
with Christina Zachou from the People magazine .  Here we  quote some  of  his words and thoughts  he shared with her.
"I love the sea, it gives me peace. I wish it was summer all year round " -  he says, gazing into the blue.  Christina knows  Nikos in person, so she notes,  he has a great soul and this can be seen  while you talk to him.
"When I turned 29, I thought that  I am approaching 30 soon and this was a bit strange feelling. Not that I understand it now, but I realized  it after a whole year was thinking about it. However, after age of 25, so far, I see huge changes in my character. I have changed and I have become more mature" - he reflects on his age
"I've done quite a few things regarding my profession. My dream to become a singer  have come true and I have my own CDs.   In fact, I have accomplished more things than I’ve dreamed. I do not want to be greedy, I feel blessed ."
"When I’ve just started, there was no time  for me to be happy with what happened, and now I'm more conscious.  No matter how well things are going, you always want more. You never get enough of success, still, I have not understood yet,why do I have my success.. I do not feel that I have done something special, but sometimes looking back, I say "look how many songs I have sung!" I have never enjoyed, what I’ve done,  instead I'm more happy with where I go, I think directly about  next work "
"I'm a realist, I see things as they are and not as you would like them to be. Unfortunately, most people prefer the lie, that’s why I have a few good friends. I wish my friends to say negative things too, because it shows that they love me! "
Nikos  doesn’tlike to talk about his and others private life:  "I believe that there are some limits, you can not share everything with everyone. Especially through an interview, you can not share your personal things to the entire world. I do not want to know the personal life of another, because it is not my concern....I notice that many are trying to create intrigue in order to "play" for publicity, but I do not like it.  I do not want to create intrigue or to say some bad words about others And if I had a bad word to say about someone, I would say them directly... "
“ The real friend appears in the time of your joy. If you see man happy with your happiness, it means that he loves you.
Nikos is currently sharing stage with Peggy Zina at nightclub THEA and  they have got a very special relationship:
"With Peggy  we 're friends and we spend days together as we live next door. We swim together and discuss our work. It doesn’t go out of our minds, the job is big bug. I love Peggy as a friend and as a singer. I am delighted to be working  with here . Our collaboration is one of the best I've experienced because we have personal contact, something that happens not often
Nikos  has an ability to understandpeople fromthe first handshake  "Indeed I feel like I do radiograph people without them saying a word.

Ten months ago he lost his beloved grandmother, Maria, and now , he  confesses: "Honestly,  I do not go to Patras very often. We lived in different cities with my grandmother,  so I still feel that she lives. There.  However, my parents live in Patras, so when I find time, I  go to see them. "

Nikos didn’t want to say much about his partner, actress Viki Kavoura. But building the family is in his plans, and  he dreams to have a daughter: "Yes, I want to create my little family and I am crazy with girls, I love them so much! I have two brothers, now I want to have a daughter We are always aimed for getting what we miss"
"I'm very difficult person, but as a friend maybe I'm the best and my friends knows what it means. I'm all about my friends” -  he says at the end of the conversation

Nikos Oikonomopoulos: "I have love in my soul, I have neither hatred nor malice, nor jealousy"

Sofia Bekari, the “Tralala.gr” reporter, met Nikos Oikonomopoulos in the nightclub Fever, where he performs this season together with Vasilis Karras and Eleni Fourera

(Here we propose you a slightly shortened translation of their interview)

Niko, how was your festivity season?

This year Christmas celebrations fell on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, so we were working. On Thursday we had one day gap, and after we were back to the venue again. During  the two weeks of holidays we were almost every night in the club.  . Important is that the club did well because a lot of people came to see us . We were delighted with this and hopefully, our people felt the same. Usually after the holidays things are getting a little slower and  a sort of depressed,  because the public is in a very difficult economic situation. But, thank goodness, we did not have any problems , everything went well .

Do you feel happy celebrating festivity season once again at work or you miss a bit your family ?

In fact, I'm working in this area for 13 years . I started very young and all these years  was performing  during the festivity season , never had it  at home. Half of my life I spend at work , but I do not mind. It would be harder for me if I had a family and kids... Of course , it's important that we have a job these times...

Is it easy to be good with yourself and what can 'spoil ' an artist?
It upsets me when young people who come into this job, such as singers , actors and those who have to do with the art world and limelight,  believe and think they are “something special” after they have made a song or played in one movie.
There is a sort of a "fast-food culture" - they are changing each other quickly and this hurts our job. We, the singers, are to give something out.
People see us, and when you do bad things this affects the audience. So,  you have to do good things , be serious ,  have courage and audacity - first and foremost for yourself, being smart and noble. Something is missing here in our times. The guts are missing!

Is there any space left in the music industry for the newcomers?

Sure! There was always a plenty of room there and now it is the same as it ever was...But it demands a lot of effort to be able to fulfil your dreams.

Can the artist's career last in our days, when, as you said, there is a mindset of "fast-food" acts there?

I will tell you about it after 30 years of their career, I don't want to be a liar saying about it now, especially if to remember that I am in the industry only for 7 years. Not everything depends on us, because in this particular area there is no a meritocracy, they do not think very seriously about work they do for some people, whether companies or singers. Shortly, the company should guide you and exactly this is missing!

Do you feel personally satisfied with the way you are supported by the company and your team?
Of course I feel satisfied, but everything depends on ourselves. In some things I am incompatible, so I was, I am and I will be!

Was it good for your work?

Sometimes it was not. But I was never influenced. So far the audience appreciate my work.

The audience is the final judge?
Yes, who else, if not?

How about the label and the radio?
Everything plays their part.

Can a remarkable song be buried due the various interests?
Of course, why not. It happens!

Do you think there should be a diplomacy in an artist?

There must be, to survive. But I certainly do not have it, I am not a diplomat!

Have you done any wrong steps till today?
If I have, I will see that in the future, not at the moment.

Is there something  in your career you have regrets for ?

No, I regret nothing, and, in my opinion, I do not think I've done something wrong.
.

This year you're working with Vasilis Karras. What things do you admire about him the most?

First of all I like his songs. Knowing him from the times when I was a child, I heard his songs and this is exactly what I see in the singer. I'm not interested in the personality. .... This year we worked together for the first time and have become good pals . Our work and our personal relationship is 100 % friendly and professional. I have no problem with him and none of us has anything to envy from the other . This is because he has built a huge career and because I try and wish God let me build a career equal to that of  Vasilis Karras

Is there a real friendship in the music industry between two artists ?

I think that it does not exist. We must forget about competition to become friends . At least, I do not have friends but acquaintances and, of course, I appreciate them .

Why do you think this is happening ?

Because of competition , whether we want to accept it or not, but there is no friendship there.
May be it has not happened to me to become very close to a person to develop a friendship, but if you want me to pick someone that I love and talk to on the phone very often and we are friends this is Nino . I love him very much and he is a very good guy.

Do you still keep your childhood friendship?

I always like a bird that flies from neighborhood to neighborhood and sings in various places.
I left Patras when I was very young , at 16, as a result my relationships with people changed ...

Are you a lonely person ?

Yes, I am ! I used to be more sociable , but this changed in me when at 17 I got my life in my hands and, perhaps, alienated.

Does it bother you now or you have learned to live like this ?

I've learned to live with it and it takes the sieving  to make someone a friend.
All this is because I believe in the very real friendship and not in words .

What should someone have for you to consider him a real friend?

Trustworthiness !

Isn't it something to be built within a time?

Yes , definitely it takes time, but, honestly, I have the ability  to understand another person within a short time.

How do you do this ?
I have it, I can not explain it . Someone would say that is clairvoyant , certainly, I am not. But I have an instinct, talking to people.

Does the economic difficulties of the country make you feel anxious?

I always hope that things will be sorted out, besides we should think that there is a crisis , but not forever . If you believe that things will go worse then better to die . We have only one life, because I do not believe in the afterlife ...

Is the nightlife affected?

Very much!
I have discussed it with singers who have 40 years of career and they told me how things were then, of course, there were difficulties, but there was work. They were working 7 days a week and some days were two performances a night, I know it from Giannis Parios. People were moving from one venue to another and begging for a day off. Now we work for two nights a week and feel worries that one day can be a problem. But there's nobody to blame, no singer, neither an entrepreneur. It's a crisis to blame. God knows who created it,  but pretty much all of us know that there are some people who took advantage of the public money and Greece arrived to where it is now.

Whether the artist has the right to tell their opinion on public?

Anyone can say what they want and if we start to damn the one who does it this is not a democracy but fascism. Of course you must not splutter, you do not have that right , but if you have thoughts you can express them.
I am not in the side of fascism or communism. I have learned to live in democracy, so if I have an opinion I say it, that's what I've learned.

Has this crisis debunked the artists?

Of course it has. Since the TV and radio channels are playing Giannis Parios, who I consider to be the greatest singer, alongside the buffoons... everything is debunking.  Previously, there were love and adoration of the people towards the singer. Now there isn't so much of that.

It looks like you are consciously trying to exist only when you really have something to say?

Yes, I always do this. I speak only when I have to say about my work, because I'm a singer...
What for to be everyday on TV. What can I say?

There are your colleagues who do that.
Well they do, because they want to. It is quite democratic:  everyone can say what they want as long as it doesn't affect the other...

Do you have any phobias?
Hospitals! I fear everything that has to do with health in general. I have phobia even to go to the dentist.

"Eilikrina" ("Sincerely") is the title of your new record work . Tell me a bit about it.

First I want to thank one by one all the composers and lyricists! I thank them because they gave me very good songs and I believe, that and the people love these songs too . There are 16 songs recorded and sung, and that was successfully done! I am very happy for my new album and I hope that people feel the same.

Are the words of the song more important for you than the music?

Yes. In fact, it is 50/50 , but it is the lyrics to make you listen to the song after 20-30 years and this is my goal .

Is there a genre of the song that stands out for you a bit more?

I love the zeibekiko that withstand time, and the ballads. Besides, I am listening to the people and I get there «vibes» for what they like.

Do the young songwriters come and bring you their new songs?

Yes, they do it constantly and we speak a little bit about them. I always listen to the songs and if I like one, I take it for the CD... If you check my CD's you'll always find the new names there.

Is there an author you would like to say "Thank you"  because of some reasons?

Not just one! I start with Eleni Giannatsoulia , Spyros Giatras and Alekos Chryssovergis with who I worked for  many years. But there are many more and I thank them all equally, because they all gave me something for the success. I have to say thanks to everybody!

Have your admirers ever put you in an awkward position?

I do not like talking about them this way. But I can tell you that all the people express their love differently.
One will tell you a simple "Bravo" and another express themselves differently, for example giving you a kiss.

Have you ever had a trouble with the people because of the personal problems to be forgotten in time of work?

Many times, because I'm moody, so I'm almost constantly having that problem even when I was a child. But when on stage you're thinking that you should give some joy to the audience and you do it. May be not very well, but 90%. ...

Your official page on facebook and your fan club are very well organized and giving you an active support in whatever you do . What is required from an artist is to get it?

I do not know very well about it but I know that there are thousands of people and I thank them very cordially . There must be a personality and talent in an artist .

Why do you keep yourself out of the online world ?

I do not like to write or talk on facebook and tell you what I want using this way of communication. I prefer to talk to you close , it's so simple .  Isn't it a way to have more direct contact between the artist and his fans ? And if I existed in social media  thousands of people would try to talk to me. I am a human , how could I respond to everyone ?

Have anybody ever tried to insult you?

No, not directly in my face. But if to contact online, it can be possible done, because there are always people who love you and those who hate you.

Do some people envy you?

Honestly, those envious are your best fans.

Can you tell me more about it, it's interesting!

For example, I read negative comments in youtube, but the very same people write in other places about my songs some positive comments. These people challenge me...
I have love in my soul , I have neither hatred nor malice, nor jealousy .

Is this about an ideal world?
Well, yes. Love is the message I want to carry and nothing else. There should be no jealousy (envy).

Are there Stars existing in Greece ?

I do not believe in Stars, to me it is something made to shine. But I think some people have an asterisk , for example, some actors when you see them on TV , they click , maybe they don't have a great talent , but there is an asterisk in them.
But when you take  a person and promote them daily , for example Lady Gaga, is she a Star ?  Why? Just because she's wearing meat and blood or nothing and this is enough to call her a Star? Tell me about it!
 Then what Parios should be?

What are your nearest future plans?

Until the end of February I will be here. Then I will tour America, at the end of March.

Are you ready to meet our compatriots in America?

Honestly, I have an aerophobia and this is the only what i think about. About my trip to Australia I felt like Passion of the Christ. I took some sleeping pills, but they wouldn't work for 24 hours flight.
But yeah, I really want to go there, by the way, only still feel a little bit my aerophobia!

What sort of program have you prepared?

I almost never have the same program, I like to improvise. The first part is about the same, but the second one I always change. Of course there is a basis, but we do everything - whatever you like. I do not like to sing just my own songs, I sing the covers in the second part

What song do you consider to be your greatest hit so far?

Great success will be the song that was, you still listen after 20 years. Then you ask me and I'll tell you!
Sure there are some that stand out. There are some! Such as  "Koita na mathaineis", "Akousa", "Ola gia sena" ... There are many songs coming to my mind, but I never listen to myself on the radio. When I hear they play my songs, I change the station, because I am bored. I've heard them a thousand times.

Which goal would you like to conquer in the next 5 years?

Five years is a short time. If you ask me - in 15 years, then I would like to have a family, to be healthy, to have the same job and to talk with you like now, when we are older.
