Nikos Oikonomopoulos talks to tralala.gr (Part 3)

Nikos Oikonomopoulos recently gave his interview to the journalist Sofia Bekiari (Tralala.gr) in his dressing room at the nightclub FEVER.

You're one of these rare artists to record nowadays the full length albums. How easy it is and how much work is needed for that?

It’s not only me involved.  There is a company behind me to produce it.  I work well with businessman Thanasis Papageorgiou, with whom we are together for 6 years. There are many factors for making the songs, including the people to deliver the songs. When you have good songs and good equipment you will put them on your CD, to give it to the people to listen to. What can you do? One song to give? I  think it is very poor and it is not nice. So if things go like that , then I do not know where we will end up. It is something which none of us has experienced earlier.

As for the authors, do you like to work with people who you know, so success to come a little easier?

I love working with people who so far have given me songs to all my CDs and I still have them on my new disk, because when they bring a good song, it goes well. But if you do not like it does not make a  sense to put it on. Out of the five songs by every lyricist or a composer not all five will do. We will choose the best in our opinion. Success is never guaranteed. The audience will decide that. Not me.

Are you open to collaborations with younger people in this sphere?

I'm very open! I put  people who have never given songs to other artists to my all three last CDs. I f they brought some song to me and it was nice, why not to add it?  Should they have the other's surname?  Namely: “I'm so and so and so, I write well” - so what?  It doesn’t matter.  There are other people who should emerge, because they have talent. And I'll be one of  those who support them.

What about the radio stations and there playlists, how big is their role in the success of a certain track?

I think that to play many times is brainwashing. When a song is played ten times a day on radio, whether you like it or not, you unconsciously learn it. And surely we like not all the songs, neither my songs are loved by everybody. There are many songs that I don’t like, but listening to them every day and I have learned them.
In the regions they  play all the songs and this I know personally, because I have sung in many cities and I see that the audience knows all my songs, while in Athens it is more difficult. Large radio stations - certainly thanks them for for playing my songs - are playing many songs that I don’t like. Normally, however, people should decide what they want to hear.

Pantelis Pantelides has made a huge success, which started from uploading songs in internet, do you see a talent in him?

All I can say is that the guy has made the effort,  and well done, and congratulations! I wish him to continue to exist and write songs that touch people. Because by the time this guy, no matter what others say, has an influence on people, it means something. They found in him something,
without dispute. So why to criticize him? Is it bad if the new guy achieved success?

Till when we can see you at Fever?

I never have the grounds to go to such and such a date. We're going to go as long as necessary. When we feel tired or that we have nothing else to give, we will stop, freshen up to go to our next stage.
Regarding the prices, what do you do about it?
Prices have not increased at all. Probably they are more reduced than other years. There has been no increase as far as I know, since the company is not mine. But I can participate too in this process and I can say my opinion. Thank God, my opinion is respected and everything goes well.

What collaboration you would like to have and you never had just yet?

Personally, I do not like to show myself only,  because there is not only Oikonomopoulos there. People  love not only Oikonomopoulos. People love many singers and many songs. I will never become selfish. I love collaborations and I love to share the stage with other people who have something to give. I hope in the near future to sing with Giannis Poulopoulos, who has countless songs and I would love to see him, and I have never seen him performing live. And I’d like people to see him, the one, who sang for so many years.

What makes you so attracted to Giannis Poulopoulos?

I am attached to his songs because they remind me of my father, who sang a lot of Poulopoulos and liked him very much. So I am left with this.  When I met him two or three years ago with his friend Georgos, who introduced us, I realized that he is a remarkable man and on the top of all he has got great repertoire. He has awesome songs and why should he not he be listened by youth? Why should he not be re-heard by the public? I realized that this is my job!

Do you think that the artist has an expiration date?

This  is people to judge, not the singer. The singer naturally has an instinct when to stop, but finally this is left for people to decide.
You never can not compete a great singer who has left behind a great story of songs. Nobody can debate not his work, neither his personality. The personalities can be whatever they wants. This is nobody’s business.  I might not like the personality of a man or what he is doing, but his work ,  the essence of him his singing, this is what wins over me.  I do not envy anyone and I am glad when younger or older people have success. This means that people love them and will not stop them ever.

You are an an artist with many women admirers. Was it anything  unusual ever has happened to you and you would like to share with us before closing this interview?

There is nothing special coming into my mind. A number of women have come to my dressing room to know me. They love me and I accept it. Always welcome. It's nice. They flirt with me and I flirt too. Nothing bad. If people love you, all you can do is to to reciprocate their love. There is nothing wrong in loving a person, it is the most normal thing, especially when she is a woman. It's very nice. But to add something else here, now that we conclude this interview, I heartly wish a good year to Tralala.gr and all your readers. I love you and I am glad that one more year we are here and do good things.

Nikos Oikonomopoulos talks to tralala.gr (Part 2)

Nikos Oikonomopoulos recently gave his interview to the journalist Sofia Bekiari (Tralala.gr) in his dressing room at the nightclub FEVER.

Have you ever been told that you are thinking too highly of yourself?

Is it possible that no one is saying that, if to remember, as I told you, that the world is full of evil people ?  Certainly I have been. However, I do not get angry, because I know myself that I have never bothered anyone and my conscience is quiet. And if you find one saying it, let him come  and tell me face to face.

How easy is it for you to deal with all these things in your mind and to be comfortable with yourself?

All the people are different. Not everybody can think like Oikonomopoulos. I have my own way of thinking, of doing what i do. I am like that, I can’t change and become something else.

What do you think about the political situation in the country?

It’s a mess!
What can I see? Is it anything good there|? Who is to be blamed? The only thing I can say we all are guilty. Everybody put their little brick , for better or for worse. It is bad to blame others. Not only others to blame, but us too. It’s not only politicians to blame. certainly, they are guilty, nad there are documents confirming that. But we are guilty too. I say it not only about me, this is for all the past years. About people who did very big mistakes. Now they pay for that. And the young people are paying too, which are their children.

Could the artists, with their influence on the biggest part of people, do something to awake the nation?

As I said all people are different. There's no way I can be able to convince many people. My job is to sing. If I start talking about politics, they will laugh me away or they will think I'm making fun of them. Because it would mean that I know everything. But I do not know anything. I  know only how to sing and all I see is the essence of reality, namely that people have no money, no job and can not come to be entertained, as they do not have money to pay the rent, they can’t pay for the show.

What is your opinion about  “Golden Dawn”, which strongly entered the political stage?

One thing I can say is that I am against violence ... I do not like violence! I think the violence is for people who live in the jungle, who fight the animals for their food. We are living in a democratic country and need neither fascism nor violence. To hit a hand on the table and to make you to do something, it's called fascism. We are free people, we have our opinion. Simple things. We can talk, not kill. On the other hand I am not the one to judge the parties. People are to judge and to vote. They will choose who they want to govern the country. I take part in this as well.  The problem is how to vote and nobody can say that this or that man will help us. From there nothing longer depends on us, this is on our politicians to help our country. There are other interests outside of Greece, and they affect our country and we can not do anything.

How easy it is to be on top of the people’s preferences without a display of your personal life?

I think people love what is authentic, without accessories. Here it is the bottom line.. I can not promise anything, all I can do is sing. The result of my work are my songs. I have nothing else to say or show.

What is your opinion about "public relations"?

I do not like! I want to attract people who really want to know me as Niko, as a human being and not as a singer. I am not for the "public relations" and that is why I don’t have many friends. The actual amount of my friends can be counted by the fingers of one hand. For me friendship is something important, something sacred. My friend is like a family. it is impossible to have everybody as a friend and call him “my brother”... This is a lie.

Are there any good managers in Greece?

There are capable people to help artists and journalists. I do not managed by someone specifically regarding  what I should do, because I do nothing but singing.  How to manage me? To tell me how to sing?  No! But there are people that talk about the songs that you put on the disc. These are people from my work. They are  very direct and mine. I would discuss with them to get their point of view.

Is the selection of songs you put on the disk based on your own judgment?

This is typical for all artists.  The artist should be a critic, he can express the best of the songs! If you give me a song and tell me to sing it by force, which I do not ever, how can you say if it does not fit me and it is  not coming out of me?  Everything that I put on CD, I've sung along with many others and we decide with people I work what to put on the disc.

Who is more important for the future success of the song: the authors or the singer?

All! The music, the lyrics and the singer. All play a big role. There are very good songs , which are not heard because they were have not executed well. Maybe this is not something magical, something magical is because what we do with our work. We can  bring out the songs to the world.

Do you have any regrets with a choice of tracks in your CD?

No, I have no regrets about my songs.  All songs are there for a reason and purpose. I liked them there and then people  will see whether they is good or not. Not me. I tried to do what I have done.

You have many hits. Which one stands out for you a little bit more?

Usually many songs are mentioned to me, but  I always distinguish the song "Look to learn", because it was my first song. It gives me joy because with this song I started, I became known and loved by people.  It was the beginning of something.

And what about the  new songs which came out some time ago?

I already perform two or three songs and from what I see people love them. Slowly - slowly and I will show other because I do not want to include all at once in the program and to impose upon the world to listen to. I want people to listen to the silence and come to the club and tell me "Niko, sing this song". Which happens often. For this reason I did rehearse a few days ago. I went through all the songs, to be ready if someone asks something to sing.

Nikos Oikonomopoulos talks to tralala.gr. (Part 1 )

Nikos Oikonomopoulos recently gave his interview to the journalist Sofia Bekiari (Tralala.gr) at his dressing room at the nightclub FEVER.

Part 1

Niko, this year we see you at “Fever”  having an interesting collaboration with Stamatis Gonidis. How do you feel working together?
I love him very much both as a person and as an artist! Regarding the professional connection he is one of the people who believed in and loved me from the start. Personally we're friends, even though we do not hang out every day, but whenever we find an opportunity we talk to each other.

What  can expect those who choose to see the show at “Fever”?
Stamatis and I sing laika songs as  people do not expect to hear something different from us both. Katerinoula (Katerina Stikoudi), which is a very nice and remarkable girl, creates her own special part of the program, a pop song. There is no arrogance there and I’d say that we do very well ... we really are very good together! Both Katerina and Stamatis are very good people over all. We have a mutual understanding, which is rare nowadays.

You lead the show, right?

I do not like the word lead! We are a group of people working together. I am not the only one to sing, so I donot lead anything. We're all together, and together we do what people see.

What is your criterion of people  you collaborate with?

First of all, I want a serious person and a professional. I can not work with someone who has no talent to sing and unfortunately there are many such people in all jobs. Specifically now, about  Stamatis, this is a man who has made a career of 25 years, nobody can challenge him, he has got really good songs, which I like and I sing. So, why not to collaborate with him? Only with such people I want to work with people who have something to give. That’s why I am  not the only to perform at this venue, others also have something to give!

What it means to be a professional to Nikos Oikonomopoulos?

The main thing is to make people coming to see you, to have fun. To show them that you  love them the same way they love you.  Whatever you say, these people feed you and everybody who works here ... we ought to respect the audience

On the occasion of your friendly relationship with Stamatis Gonidis, do you think there is a  real friendships in the show business?

No, so far I do not believe! May be later there will appear a friendship which will reverse what I say, but at this time I do not think there is a  friendship for me. Never the less, I  differentiate some people like Stamatis Gonidis,  and Katerina Stikoudi is between those who I appreciate, because she is a  good person. I have also a very good friendly relations with Giannis Parios.
I love Nino very much, because he is a very nice guy with a good soul.

How difficult it is the nightlife job since it has evolved through the effects brought by the economic crisis?

The economic crisis has brought difficulties not only to our work, it affected all the  jobs, just in our work we have to deal with the last thing people think about, which is entertainment. People now are not amused with their life and even when they come to have fun, they  eventually forget why did they come, because in their mind they keep their problems. There are too may of them within this world, and for me - too,  because we all have problems, either financially or personally.  But everyone should try to help our fellow man have fun. Why should we be malicious or resent ‘them’ against “us”? For what reason to envy the other who makes efforts? I’m not a jealous person and I respect all people. I am happy when people are doing well and have a prosperity in their life. I am a man, who started from the bottom and not just was talking about work, generally in my life I've been through very difficult times and maybe that is why I have become stronger than other people.

So, you had hard times and have done a lot of work which made you more conscious as a person and as an artist?

Certainly! I believe,  what has happened to me is completely normal. This was an evolution of things , in my own case at least, as I expected them to be. When you work a lot, you are not bothered with people around you and you do not envy others.
One of the reasons we have reached this point in our country is the fact that people are malicious, envious and their only concern is how to make others feel bad, tease them, make them feel like nobody . I do not like people to call me nationalist, I simply love my country and the people who lives in it, because I'm the part of this people. Why to be treated like something else? Since you are not something neither you nor me. I am a simple man and just sing. What happened? Calm down! Some sing like me and others are journalists like you ... We're all the same! Dignity and respect, nothing else ... I respect you and  you respect me!

You mentioned you are not jealous ... However, you can experience other people’s  envy and if so, how do you handle it?

Obviously I feel people’s jealousy . Even though it's disgusting, but I do not pay attention. I was upset when I was doing my first steps 6 years ago, but I thought to myself that I had to get over it. It's part of my job. There are people and there always will be malicious, wicked and envious people among them, just as there are good people in our lives who have supported us, and have helped us in our work and in our personal lives.

You started from a talent show but nonetheless no one associate you with it. How do you feel about that?

And why not to associate me with it? I have no problem with that. My choice was to take part in this game to be known by people. I will never change what think of it. I knew why I went and I am very happy about this, because what I have achieved so far, succeeded starting from there, at the beginning I did not ever forget.

However, I believe people see clearly your talent, your voice and so you do not stay in their mind only there.

I believe it because that is the reality. If I had no talent, I would not sing. Same I am not doing things, which I do not know. I do not write songs because I do not know how to write. But if I get an inspiration I would write, and  if I like the song, I will sing it. I can not do things that do not suit me, or say things that are false. Why should I tell you things I do not believe , if after two years you’ll come back and say: "You told me one thing and now you do another."  I want to be consistent with what I say, and what I tell you now, I said six years ago and will say six years after. This is the way to be happy with myself, with the way things work and how do I think. I am very glad I am that way. It is not selfish, it's just a good sign for me!

Nikos Oikonomopoulos talks exclusively to ΜΟΥΣΙΚΆ ΑΣΤΈΡΙΑ

Manos Kornaros, the host of the radio show “Music Stars” (ΜΟΥΣΙΚΆ ΑΣΤΈΡΙΑ ) on the radio Melody 88FM  has got an interview of the laika song major star, Nikos Oikonomopoulos, which was the first this singer gave in 2013! The topic initially was set around his new CD, the album “Ennoeitai”, but besides it touched many other interesting subjects.

After a traditional New Years greetings exchange, Kornaros asked the young singer, how did he spend his holidays.  Nikos said he did not have holidays, during the winter festivities he was at the nightclub “Fever”, onstage. “We were entertaining people, what else could we do? We can’t do anything else, being the singers...”
Manos said, he believes everything is good there, because wherever Nikos is appearing there is always a success. Nikos confirmed, that things at the nightclub he performs together with Stamatis Gonidis and Katerina Stikoudi, go really well.
Manos Kornaros, while asking about the new, released at the end of 2012, CD “Ennoeitai”,  emphasized that this disc is already very popular and has got a huge radio play.
Nikos confirmed that  this album goes really well, it is one of the  top CDs, as far as he knows, in Greece this time. He is grateful to God and to people, who appreciate his work. He said, it took a lot of time to collect the songs for this album.

Manos  asks, if Nikos Oikonomopoulos has a secret formula of the success.
The answer Nikos gave was simple: he has no any formula of success, his job is to find good songs to sing.... But, let us say, the answer was not full. Everybody knows, the real secret is in the voice of Oikonomopoulos, which is the cornerstone of his achievements.

Speaking about his album “Ennoeitai” Nikos said, he likes to have various songs by different authors. “Fortunately, there are new young people who write songs”. For example, Lemonis Skopelitis., who wrote a few songs for this CD. Or Fontas Theodorou, who wrote for Nikos’ first album  the famous hit "Κοίτα να μαθαίνεις" with the music by Panos Kapiris. Now Kapiris invested some songs, two of which were written with Eleni Giannatsoulia, the permanent Nikos’ author... “So, everybody have something to give, something different, special. I think, there are songs of different styles: laika, light laika... This diversity helps to attract a larger audience.”
Kornaros remarked that people want not only to listen to the songs and see the photos, but to know more about a singer
But, as Nikos insists, he wants to live in the songs for people. At the same time, so far,  he does not want to show his own songs in his CDs. He thinks, other people can write better songs and this will bring more success to his albums. “I am a voice of their soul”
While selecting the songs, Nikos, as he said,  usually explains to the authors why he doesn’t take this or that song to his album. Of course, he has a lot of songs offered to him.
( As Manos Kornaros  said,  “You are playing lottery!” )

The radio host started a topic about a new video clip on the song “Ennoeitai” , which looks violent. Nikos added, that maybe for him it does.  (He smashed to smithereens the hotel room there) Manos asked, if he can do the same things in life. Nikos smiled: “why not, in my life I can, but not in public”
For a change, Manos Kornaros asked Nikos if he has got one, special song from the CD. This question Nikos found impossible to answer, as he loves all the songs. But for the radio show he chose  “Μελαγχολία μου”, saying that this is a topical song, and at the same time this is a love song.
The radio host noticed, this song must be a big success at Fever. So, the topic moved to the live shows. Nikos said that he loves to perform with Stamatis Gonidis, who makes one part of the show, besides they do some duets. The show lasts till morning (the biggest part Nikos sings solo).  On the question which songs people love best, Nikos said that all the songs he sings people love and sing along with him.

The programme at Fever is going to be on till the end of February. What’s next is not clear. Most possible, there will be concerts in Thessaloniki. Speaking about shows, Manos Kornaros turned the topic to the Australian tour Nikos had in November. There are already some legends about what was happening there, because the success was enormous. Nikos modestly explained the desire of Greek Australians to tear him into parts with their wish to see and hear a singer from the homeland. But this explanation was far from being the real reason. In fact there is a lot of Greek singers coming to Australia or living there, every big city of this continent has a Greek show for each weekend. So, it was Nikos Oikonomopoulos , his voice and charisma to create this "Chamos", this craziness at his concerts there. Nikos said, he was a little scared to go by plane that far, but finally he found it was not too bad, so one day  he is going to come again for the  concert tour in  this country

Speaking about international popularity of Nikos, Manos Kornaros asked him a question, which was coming from Russia, where Nikos Oikonomopoulos is the most popular Greek singer: Why doesn't Nikos Oikonomopoulos want to take part in the Eurovision contest?
Nikos named a few reasons for that, one of the main was that Eurovision demands the performance of the song in English, but his style is laika and this is a pure Greek music, it can't be sung in other language but Greek. Manos Kornaros asked Nikos, if he knows that Americans already advertize his performances there, which are planned in October, and that they call him "the best Greek artist of our time"?  The young star modestly said, he knows Greek Americans are expecting him to come, though this is very early to speak about it. But he feels it is possible, because after Australia he became accustomed to the long flights.
Nikos knows that many people all around Greece are expecting him with the concerts and he appreciates love and support of his fans, including the FB fan page “ΑΥΤΌ ΤΟ ΑΣΤΈΡΙ”.
At the end of the topic Nikos said that his wish for the New Year to all the people is to have job and health. That having job is very important, even more important that we think. “I hope that nobody will lose thier job ...and let all of us strive to become better people in whatever way we can. With very simple ways you can become a better man, just by helping a man to find the way
and not overtake him, this is an act of love, so  let's all do what we can”
